Plot SynopsisAtmospheric, brooding thriller set in Victorian London, starring real-life husband-and-wife duo of Stewart Granger and Jean Simmons in one of their finest screen pairings. A classy British cast, evocative atmosphere and simmering sexual chemistry all help to ensure that Arthur Lubin’s gripping turn-of-the-century noir is a splendidly spiteful afternoon treat. Prominent Victorian aristocrat Stephen Lowry (Stewart Granger) poisons his wife and thinks he's got away scot-free with murder - but doesn't count on the attentions of a blackmailing maid Lily Watkins (Simmons) who witnessed the whole sordid business. The fact she knows too puts her life in danger with her murderous boss, but in attempting to dispose of her, Lowry kills the wrong woman in the fog and is put on trial for murder. |
