Plot Synopsis

Intelligent and taut thriller shot on location. The screenplay was written by James Mason, Pamela Kellino and her husband, director Roy Kellino. During filming Mason and Pamela Kellino fell in love for real; Pamela divorced Roy in 1941 and went on to marry Mason.

Henpecked young farmer Mark Warrow (James Mason) is driven to murder by the spiteful behaviour of his nagging wife Martha (Sylvia Coleridge) and her drunken brother (William Devlin). When Martha shoots Mark’s beloved collie Sheppy, his temper finally snaps and he kills her; burying her remains in the garden. The shallow grave is soon discovered and Mark goes on the run from the police. Posing as a sailor, he meets Jo (Pamela Kellino), an attractive novelist travelling the countryside in a caravan and accepts her offer of a lift to Plymouth where he is supposedly joining a ship. During a few idyllic days in the country the two become close until he realizes her interest is purely professional; she is using him as the foundation for an upcoming novel entitled "I Met a Murderer." Jo reassures him that this is no longer the case; she has since fallen in love with him. As they near the South coast the police net tightens and Mark endeavours to distance himself from Jo from.
