Plot Synopsis

British thriller based on Edgar Wallace’s The India Rubber Man, and sequel to 1936's The Frog. The film offers an enjoyable mix of comedy, excitement and drama as Gordon Harker reprises his role as the amiable Inspector Elk. Director Maurice Elvey ensures the pace is brisk enough, at times to the detriment of the already confusing plot. The story was later filmed in 1962 for the German krimi series under the title The Inn on the River (Das Gasthaus an der Themse).

Following a string of robberies in London Docklands rumoured to be committed by a crime-ring orchestrated by a shadowy self-styled crook known as The Frog, Scotland Yard assigns its best detective, Inspector Elk (Gordon Harker), to bring the crooks to justice. Elk returns from Hendon Police College to discover the only clue the gang leave at the scene of the crime is a drawing of a frog – and that Chicago detective Sandford (Hartley Power) has been assigned to observe him in action. Still, that is enough for intrepid Inspector Elk to solve the case, but not until avoiding considerable danger from exploding telephones boxes, attempted murder and gas-filled rooms.
