The comedy Another Shore was directed by Charles Crichton, set in Dublin, it gave a starring role to Robert Beatty as an Irish day-dreamer who hopes fate will transport him to a sunny Tahitian island. To achieve his goal, he begins hanging out on a dangerous street corner in the hope of getting the chance to save a wealthy person. When he assists a rich man who has been involved in an accident who should then generously award him by paying his passage to the South Seas it begins to look as though his wish will come true, but he is jerked out of his world of romantic fantasy by a down-to-earth girl who sets him on a steadier path which leads to marriage.

There is something sad about a film that curbs the imagination of a dreamer and instead pushes him towards a life of banal normality. Moira Lister, a South African actress, made her Ealing debut in this film and Stanley Holloway appeared as the alcoholic reprobate who leads the hero into temptation. Although it preceded the films commonly accepted as Ealing comedies (it was billed as a tragi-comedy) by now the revolution is in sight.
