Norman Truscott (Norman Wisdom) is a dry cleaning assistant who dreams of being a singer. He takes singing lessons from voice coach Miss Dobson (Hattie Jacques), but only has the confidence to sing if Judy, a wheelchair-bound friend, is present. One morning unscrupulous professional singer, Vernon Carew (Jerry Desmonde), visit’s Norman workplace to have a suit pressed and leaves two free tickets for his evening performance. Carew's singing career is flagging and when he hears Norman's voice, he concocts a plan to record his voice and market it as his own.
