Plot SynopsisBased on a successful ATV serial from 1956/7 by Peter Key, this science fiction thriller concerns a creature from outer space secreted in a radioactive cloud on the mountain of Trollenberg in Switzerland. The taut screenplay by screenwriter Jimmy Sangster extracts the most from the situations and is helped by strong, resourceful acting from a solid supporting cast including Warren Mitchell in an early role. The film was released in the US under the title The Crawling Eye. The mysterious disappearance of various climbers on the Trollenberg mountain brings United Nations science investigator Alan Brooks (Forrest Tucker) to the Swiss Alps ski resort. Brooks joins forces with Professor Crevett (Warren Mitchell) at the local observatory to solve the mystery of the disappearances and an unusual cloud floating aside the mountain. Also staying at the Alpine hotel is newspaper journalist Philip Truscott (Laurence Payne) and travelling mind-reading act Anne Pilgrim (Janet Munro) and her sister Sarah (Jennifer Jayne). The sinister visitors on the mountain sense that Anne and her telepathic powers present an obvious danger and this puts her life in perilous danger. Meanwhile, headless corpses are discovered on the mountain and a climbing geologist returns as a zombie-like killer intent on murdering Anne. When his attempt fails the radioactive cloud begins to ominously descend down the mountain towards the hotel. |
