Plot SynopsisAdapted from the long-running Neil Grant stage play, screenwriters Harry Fowler Mear, Du Garde Peach and Michael Hankinson fleshed-out the original storyline for this 1936 film version produced by Julius Hagen at Elstree. The result is a typically well directed romantic comedy-thriller by the underrated American helmer Bernard Vorhaus, who makes sure the fast-paced plot doesn't lack for moments of tension and droll humour. Character actor Ronald Squire has a rare leading role and there are strong supporting performances from Felix Aylmer and Katie Johnson, but the acting honours are not unexpectedly stolen by Margaret Rutherford, making an auspicious film debut at the age of 44. Master forger Jim Kent (Ronald Squire), returning home from Wormwood Scrubs, finds his equally crooked nephew Gilbert (Arthur Macrae) has been inveigled into committing the same crime. Kent appoints himself the task of protecting his nephew from the Alpine international counterfeiting gang, but the undertaking is made more complicated when his niece Linda (Jane Baxter) falls in love with the young detective, Det. Insp. Forsythe (Anthony Bushell), in charge of investigations. Gilbert has no intention of going straight, so Kent follows his nephew and niece to the Alpine resort where Gilbert is to and continue manufacturing "funny money." Hot on their trail is Forsythe; who is waylaid in an Alpine cabin whilst Kent and Gilbert catch the train home. When counterfeit notes are discovered Kent’s train compartment he is put behind bars once more, but the come to realise he’s shielding someone when counterfeit notes continue to surface. |
