After an absence of three years New Order returned in 1989 with their most commercially successful LP up 'til then (their first U.K. No.1 LP), Technique (Factory 1989 cat no. FACT275). From it here's the delightfully poppy song Run, with a magical coda starting at 2:42. Fantastic.

We finish today with one of Britain's most exciting new acts, Porridge Radio. Formed in Brighton in 2015, they are noted for vocalist Dana Margolin's alternately impassioned and sardonic vocal delivery, and her intriguing lyrics, which furrow the warring human desires to belong and yet also to be free, particularly in relationships. Popol Vuh were a German krautrock/ambient musical collective from 1969 onward who eschewed the blues base of Anglo-rock and carved their own niche. Though their records were only available as imports, they were highly influential on the British music scene as they wrote the soundtracks for Werner Herzog's film (though the video clip is not his). This is the delightful Letzte Tage – Letzte Nächte, which closes the album of the same name (Germany: United Artists 1976). Hope you like it.

We start today with an absolute classic from Aretha Franklin and Do Right Woman, Do Right Man, originally the B-side of her single I Never Loved A Man (The Way I Love You) (Atlantic 7" 1967), collected on her superb album Aretha's Gold (Atlantic 1968), an absolute essential for any self-respecting 60s record collection.

Pure Hell were a U.S. Punk band, established in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1974, the first all-Black punk/afropunk band. Released their only single, a cover of the Lee Hazelwood classic These Boots Were Made for Walking c/w No Rules (Golden Sphinx Records 7" 1978) in the U.K.. Absolutely fantastic.

John Hartford (1937 – 2001) was an American folk, country, and bluegrass composer and musician known for his mastery of the fiddle and banjo, as well as for his witty lyrics, unique vocal style, and extensive knowledge of Mississippi River lore. His most famous song was Gentle on my Mind, but this is the delightful This Eve of Parting, from his third album The Love Album (RCA Victor 1968), the accompanying video being from the film Lady Bird, which introduced me to this excellent song.
