  • Silent Noise were a punk quartet from Norwich who, like many of their contemporaries, sadly only released one single on an independent label, and here it is, I've Been Hurt (So Many Times Before) (Easy Records 7" 1979). Hope you like its Buzzcockian charms.

    • We conclude, as promised last week, with two gems from Australia's finest, The Go-Betweens. First, The Ghost And The Black Hat, from their fourth LP Liberty Belle and the Black Diamond Express (Beggars Banquet 1986), then we conclude with the beautiful Hope Then Strife, with its haunting refrain @ 0:40, then the full glory of the chorus @ 0:58. I get a lump in my throat every time. It concludes their fifth LP Tallulah (Beggars Banquet 1987). Hope you like them too. Until next week ...

        • Black Belt Eagle Scout is a Native American queercore singer/songwriter from Portland Oregon, and this is the beautifully romantic B-side Half Colored Hair (Saddle Creek 7" 2019), also from her third album At the Party With My Brown Friends (Saddle Creek 2019). Tender, beautiful, and moving. Buy here: https://blackbelteaglescout.bandcamp...-brown-friends.

          • I know nothing about band Chi Runner except that their song So Ready, from the compilation sampler Vinyl Post: Volume 2 (Vinyl Post 2019) is excellent. Anyone with any information about them, please inform me. Thanks.

            • Our U.K. indie punk single comes from London band 'Fatal' Microbes , formed by 14 year old Honey Bane and two sons of Poison Girls's singer Vi Subversa. This is their debut single Violence Grows (Small Wonder 7" 1979). Next week I'll conclude this trawl through indie punk with Poison Girls themselves.

              • Torres released one of the albums of the year with her fourth LP Silver Tongue (Merge 2020). We finish with two great songs, the anguished Good Grief and then the beautiful love ballad Gracious Day whose refrain and chorus from 0:42 recalls traditional folk songs. A lovely way to end today's musical selection. Buy here: https://torrestorrestorres.bandcamp..../silver-tongue. Until next week ...

                • R.I.P.

Phil Spector, probably the best record arranger & producer ever, second only to George Martin.

                  • I watched this clip on Talking pictures TV. I'd never heard of "The Orchids". Britain's first true girl group in that they were all 14 year old schoolgirls.
                    Not bad at all!!

                    • Born in Australia and residing in California, Hazel English wrote one of the best albums of last year with Wake UP! (Polyvinyl 2020). A deceptively sunny and poppy artefact, this was no 60s pop nostalgia fest. The lyrics and subject matter showed a more anguished alienated state, particularly for wimmin, as witnessed in the official video for the title track. Buy here: https://polyvinylrecords.bandcamp.com/album/wake-up.

                        • Poison Girls were part of the 70s anarcho-punk scene along with Crass. Formed in Brighton in 1976, they were unusual in having as a vocalist Vi Subversa, who was a 40 year old mother of two, one of her sons formed 'Fatal' Microbes, posted last week. She wrote from wimmins perspective, often about sex and gender politics, normally from an anarcho-syndicalist viewpoint. They managed to release five albums in their lifetime. This is the excellent Under the Doctor, from their debut release, the 8 track maxi-E.P. Hex (Small Wonders 12" 1979), which finishes our journey through U.K. indie punk of the late 70s.

                            • Glitoris are an LGBTQI+ post-punk quartet from Canberra ACT, Australia and they finish this selection of mostly angry and angstsy wimmin with two superb songs. To celebrate Joe Biden's inaugaration Trump Card (self released digital single 2017) and we finish with Spit Hood (Buttercup Records 7"/digital 2019) a critique of failures in the youth criminal justice system and the over-representation of Aboriginal youth in detention, as witnessed by the end of video captions. Caution: adult themes/language both videos. Buy here: https://glitoris.bandcamp.com/track/trump-card and here: https://glitoris.bandcamp.com/track/spit-hood. Until next week ...

                              • Help Stamp Out Loneliness is a great name for a band, and this is the excellent Record Shop (wiaiwya digital single 2011), taken from their eponymous debut LP (wiaiwya/Papillons Noirs 2011). A great way to start Saturday. Buy here: https://wiaiwya.bandcamp.com/album/h...out-loneliness.
