Shame. Always liked him, thought he played Bob very well. I believe he fell out with James Bolan and suffered financially due to this.

Interesting that in the BBC news article http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-42067506, various actors have given tributes, but there's no comment from his fellow Likely Lad James Bolam. Should we read anything into that as to how well they got on off-screen?

Ah, from comments in the BBC obituary http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-33181740 it sounds as if they had a falling-out. James Bolam sounds to have rather an acTOR's (*) ego.

(*) Said in a plummy, hammy Donald Sinden voice :-)

In James Bolam's defence I have to say he is a real pro and does not suffer fools gladly, much of his stuff is one take and probably expects the same from others- not saying this has anything to do with the Likely Lads or Rodney Bewes's work. When he does a sitcom the studio audience more or less see it like they would on the telly and not have to sit through loads of retakes. I can imagine he stayed with 'New Tricks' for so long because the rest of the cast were the same- old school.

Very sad news. He will be forever known as Bob Ferris but "The Likely Lads" was such an iconic series that was loved by so many people. R.I.P.

I'm sure 'the true story' will come out. But when you get phrases like 'he was a one off' from your agent, you wonder how easy he was to work with.

Ditto. He made a sitcom after LL where he lived in the big smoke and wrote often to his dear old mum. Now what was the name of that. It was never shown in Australia to my knowledge and I have not been able to download it anywhere or even seen it on YT.

It was "Dear Mother... Love Albert" (1969). Not familiar with it myself.
