    The son of Christopher Beeny has just reported on Twitter (quoted on a Facebook page that I subscribe to) that Christopher died on 3 January:

    Very sorry to read this. Enjoyed his performances on TV, especially alongside Thora Hird in In Loving Memory and also in Upstairs Downstairs.

          Christopher Beeny, the actor, who has died aged 78, was best known as the chirpy footman, chauffeur and butler, Edward Barnes, in the hugely popular 1970s series Upstairs Downstairs, which charmed audiences on both sides of the Atlantic with its stories of the Bellamy family and their servants; towards the end of his career he became a regular on Last of the Summer Wine...
