  • What A Carve Up

This one's doing the rounds of the commercial TV stations at the moment, in the "loop the loop" system of handing old movies to each other until they come back again. The next screening I can locate it on Saturday morning at 06.00 on the Movies For Men channel (Freeview 48). Always worth a look to see the old faces of this "nearly a Carry On" movie, plus Donald Pleasance, Michael Gough, Denis Price and Adam Faith (!). If I didn't know it was from a book I'd accuse it of ripping off a classic Laurel and Hardy film, almost identical in story and settings. The central character comes into an inheritance and goes to an old dark house with a friend, where there are all kinds of mysteries, murder and mayhem. The recorder is set, which means another couple of hours later taking out the ads. Doh!

Yes, great cast...have a look at The Laurel-Hardy Murder Case and see if you agree with me on the similarities. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5JU3JDxpJk

Yes, it is very similar to the Laurel and Hardy Murder Case, this is one of my favourites of theirs.

I saw this as a kid at the Savoy Acton and loved it so much I went to see it three days in a row---still one of my favourite films.

I saw it once and bought the DVD for £2 on ebay. Great movie.

'What a Carve Up' was based on the novel "The Ghoul" which was published in 1929. 'The Laurel and Hardy Murder Case' was released in 1930, so it's likely that they both used the same source.
