  • The Late Edwina Black (1951)

A welcome showing on Talking Pictures (Saturday 20th May) of this entertaining murder mystery that, as far as I can tell, has not been on tv for about 20 years or so. Jean Cadell reprises her mean-faced ‘Whisky Galore’ character, this time as Edwina Black’s devoted housekeeper and Roland Culver is the tea-loving inspector – a kind of Victorian Columbo.

I will be kinder to TLEB and say it has touches of Agatha Christie. I was enthralled by the gothic atmosphere, nuances of fear and the excellent cast of Roland Culver, David Farrar, Jean Cadell and Geraldine Fitzgerald.
