  • A Kind of Loving (1962)

A Kind of Loving (1962), John Schlesinger's directorial feature-film debut, an excellent adaptation by Willis & Hall of Stan Barstow's novel, stars Alan Bates and June Ritchie (pictured). Showing on TPTV on Wednesday 24th @ 11.25pm. One of my favourite films from this period, there's also excellent support from Thora Hird, magnificently horrid as the proverbial mother-in-law, though the strength of the source and film is that all the characterisation is of real human beings, there's no stereotypes and everyone's point of view is represented (witness Vic's sister who tells him off for being petulant). The pill came on the market two years later, but the dilemma of the film still affected women onwards, especially from the working class. The 1982 TV version is also of some merit.
