  • The Mercy

Anyone looking for a lovely recreation of 1960's seaside nostalgia will welcome The Mercy, where you can practically taste the salt in the air and smell the fish and chips. The story though is much less convincingly created, despite a close adherence to the known facts. The decision to cast Colin Firth is probably at fault, fine actor though he is, he gives the deeply flawed Donald Crowhurst a heroic quality that isn't really sustainable in the context of the narrative. The films aim for a 'Scott of the Antarctic' vibe where every error seems to be forced on him rather than created from his own shortcomings. That doesn't really ring true as the whole expedition starts to fall apart.

Its an entertaining 90mins and has some excellent supporting performances but it fades from the memory pretty quickly.
