    Hi Clive,
I have found two paintings by Willem van Mieris titled "Susanna and the Elders", but neither are the one. He might have done more than two. It's amazing how many paintings there are on this theme. I have found it's based on a Bible story in the Old Testament - Daniel, chapter 13.
Oh, poor Susanna, what an ordeal! Daniel to the rescue.

That would make sense, as the story comes from the Bible, where a woman bathing is being spied on by men. Would fit the film's theme.

Hi Shirley/agutterfan, Who would have thought there was more than one painting on this theme? A right 'shower' this is turning out to be!

The answer? The Cine-Tourist.net site "A picture of great significance: Hitchcock's Susanna" states that Frans Van Mieris painted it in 1731

There is a page that discusses Psycho and references the painting titled "Susanna and the Elders", by Van Mieris. It includes a shot from the film, of Norman standing in front of this picture. It isn't the one from the stairs. It is this picture...

So the painting at the top of the stairs, as per the original post, has yet to be identified.

The story of Susanna has been a brilliant opportunity for artists over the years. Here is a Bible story that features a nude woman. It is brilliant. It has allowed artists to paint nudes with a good old cover story of "it's in the Bible". Do a Google search of "Susanna and the Elders and you'll find hundreds of different paintings. The artists always wanted to paint nudes and customers always like to buy them, but they have often needed a good excuse to help them avoid obscenity laws.

Back to the painting at the top of the stairs. She appears clothed, and there don't appear to be any other characters in the scene, so we are back to square one.

This thread was started in March last year and it seemed a rather urgent request at the time. Zulu hasn't been back since then. It would be interesting to know if he/she ever solved the mystery.

Someone on reddit has solved this. It's 'Spring' by Edouard Bisson.
